Ilya Koverninsky was a Russian crafstman, who made the best Vodka in whole of Russia during his adulthood in the early 1800’s in rural Vladivostok. The secret to the nectar of gods has been said to come from the nearby spring with its mineral rich 4°C water used in the distilling process. Ilya’s Vodka gained fame all over the empire and was shipped all over the realm to be enjoyed by aristocrats and men of significance.

Eventually the court distiller of Tsar Alexander I heard of this special blend and got so afraid of the competition that he had Ilya beheaded and the spring destroyed. His loyal customers buried Ilya with his head inside a scarf he used to wear on his face when shielding himself from the fumes of the distilling process. The scarf was made by his grandmother and bore the traditional “Khokhloma” pattern used on this commemorative FatCloth Ilya.
